Under The Waves is Pete Droge's fifth solo effort since 1994 and the follow-up to his critically acclaimed Puzzle Tree Records debut Skywatching. Droge recorded Under The Waves’ 11 original songs at his remote recording facility Puzzle Tree Studio on an island near Seattle along with vocalist, long time collaborator and co-writer/producer Elaine Summers and cellist Eyvind Kang. With the exception of the cello, Droge plays every instrument on the album including acoustic and electric guitars, drums, bass, accordion, piano, Hammond organ, tambourine and glockenspiel among others. The album’s rich production is evident in such songs as “Under The Waves,” and “Give It All Away” while its elegant simplicity is expressed in “Going Whichever Way The Wind Blows.” Pete Droge is one third of the critically acclaimed band The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Shawn Mullins. He co-wrote the opening track, “Blue As You” and the single, “Beautiful Wreck” from Mullins’ newly released 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. Additionally, Droge co-wrote and recorded the title track to the well-received Beautiful Girls and composed scores for movies such as the award winning Tattoo, A Love Story. Furthermore, he’s produced several albums including Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard’s 2001 solo debut Bayleaf in which Droge and Gossard established a lasting collaborative relationship. The wisdom of the songs, words and rhythm feels timeless and at the same time fresh. In both production and arrangement this work feels more universal and urgent. You can sense an awakening to deeper levels of expression and unself-consciousness that feels wonderful. As a hard dieing Byrdsfan it is clear that I love the musik of Pete Droge! I like all these new songs (less-into the sunset) Sadly a very short album! Also great records are skywatching and necktie second. The cd's find a door and spacy and shakin are not realy bad,but for me it seems, the record company's tryin to push pete in a party direction! Hope to see Pete live in europe! Excuse my english, never learnd it realy! Werner Janet Love It. It's so ironic how the world of advertising which so often is the white noise of our aural lives every once and a while picks an absolute cherry from the amazingly diverse and complex fruit bowl that is the ' music industry'.I think of Feist (1234) brought to everyones attention by Apple and now it's Peter's turn thanks to Toyota. But like Feist Peter Droge has been around for a while and doing some amazing things before this recent ' hit'. I have had the pleasure of listening to his music with the Thorns and in solo form (Skywatching)The result of this is I know I'll be anticipating every new release from this artist who shows the promise of a long, prolific and creative career.' Under the Waves' while including the beautiful 'Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows' (used to absolute perfection in the indie hit Tatoo a Love Story )has much much more depth than just the one song. I think the title song 'Under the Waves' is both mellow and haunting. The expressions and sentiments of this song are so complete yet simple that it gives us almost a mantra to live. 'Butterfly' is another beautifully written song. Not only musically but lyrically too. It gives us a message that many will be able to relate to in a very personal way. It is this style in Peter's songs that I love the most. Droge says the things we too feel and lets us know we are not alone in these feelings. Well as you can see there is much more here than I can possibly tell you in this brief review.so do yourself a favor include this music in your life you will be glad you did. Nick Blair Good album. Like many, I got hooked in with 'Going whichever the wind blows'. Unfortunately the truth is the song peaks with the delivery of 'you were caught in your world.I was lost in mine.' That's not meant to be a criticism necessarily.
